The Nordic Bike 2-week Trail of the Trolls-tour is a classic, including a healthy dose of all the things that make
motorcycle riding in Norway a true adventure; spectacular passes, breathtaking views, lush valleys, deep blue fjords, turqouise glaciers, thunderous waterfalls, picturesque villages, medieval churches, historic trading posts – and some of the most exhilarating roads in the world to connect it all. We have also made a very careful selection of the best hotels and the best food available along the way, to make sure all your needs are well catered for. Yes, it’s all there, and with two weeks to spend, we promise that you get to see, feel, smell and enjoy as much of it as possible!
As for all the Nordic Bike tours, the Trail of the Trolls starts out in the Southern city of Kristiansand. For the first two-three days we ride north and east, touching the continental divide, dipping into county Sogn, home of the Sognefjord – at 220 kilometres (135 miles) and 1500 metres (4500 feet), it’s the longest and deepest fjord in the world – taking in the sights of the Eastern interior, including the Olympic city of Lillehammer and the Rondane and Dovre mountain massifs. We then cross over to Åndalsnes, where we again hit the the fjords of the West Coast. From Åndalsnes, it’s pure bliss as we
travel south on «The Golden Route»; names like Trollstigen, Geiranger and Dalsnibba may not mean much to you now, but after having been there, you will never forget: The hairpin bends cling to the sheer mountainsides; the views and the photo-opportunities ruin whatever average speed you had planned for; and the variety of landforms in the course of just a few miles is utterly unbelievable.
Leaving «The Golden Route», we continue South through the Nordfjord and Sunnfjord areas and hit the Sognefjord again, this time a little closer to the ocean, but still some 50 miles inland. Crossing a few more mountains, we enter the Hardanger region, and tracing the Hardangerfjord, we eventually reach the historic city of Bergen, hailed as the «capital of the fjords». The old hanseatic docks from the 14th century are but a few of the attractions of this beautiful city, and we spend two nights here to at least get a glimpse of some of it. After Bergen, we enjoy the Hardangerfjord-area for yet another day of riding, and then head South towards the Ryfylke-region. The scenery changes now, for Ryfylke is closer to the North Sea and more exposed to the rage of the elements. Thus, the Ryfylke-mountains are barren and weather-beaten. Down by the fjords, however, and protected from the wind, the fields are as green as they come.
The last day of the tour, we do the
Lysebotn-road. Opened a few years ago, the road is truly breathtaking, with thirty-six hairpin-bends and a 360° tunnel (it actually turns inside the mountain!). It starts at sea level, and in the course of some 8 kilometres (5 miles), it reaches an altitude of almost 2700 feet. It’s not for the faint of heart, but then; having spent a couple of weeks on roads like this, you’re kind of getting used to it…
Miles travelled: 3000 to 6000 kilometers (1800 to 3800 miles), depending on route choices
